January 11, rival Fallston downed CMW JV and Varsity basketball at Fallston
in a pair of exciting basketball games. This was the beginning of the JV's
four-game slump, which didn't end until their rematch with Perryville. The
highly anticipated Fallston rematch was scheduled for Friday February 1, and
tickets had to be purchased in advance, with no ticket sales at the door.
We got our tickets early.
Turns out that on Friday schools made a late decision to open two hours late
(we had already gotten Chris to school) on account of a threat of freezing
rain, and followed that shortly with a decision to cancel school for the
day, including after-school activities. All weekend we had to wait to see
when or if the game would be rescheduled.
It was scheduled for Tuesday February 5, and the games didn't disappoint.
The JV held a few-points lead through the half, but had fallen down maybe 8
points in the fourth quarter. With 22 seconds to go, we were down 5 points.
We inbounded the ball to our starting point guard who dribbled the length of
the court, around the arc, and hit a 3-point shot with 16 seconds on the
clock to cut the lead to 2. Chris fouled on the in-bounds play with no time
taken off the clock--both teams in the double bonus. Fallston hit only one
of two, putting CMW down 3. We managed to get into position for a long
three-pointer and Fallston fouled on the shot with 2 seconds to play. This
put our starting point guard on the line for three shots. He hits two of
two and Fallston ices him with a full time out. He re-enters after the time
out to hit the third straight free throw to tie the game with 2 seconds on
the clock, sending the game into overtime. A stunned Fallston had no chance
to recover, and CMW wins by 7 in overtime.
The varsity took the court in the second game, intent on avenging the loss
earlier in the season. It appeared that the Fallston group stunned by the
come from behind overtime loss in JV play remained equally stunned in
Varsity play, as the CMW Mustangs ran all over Fallston. A somewhat slow
start had CMW playing well but only up 5 or 6 when Mustang forward Thaddeus
went down hard with a head injury with about 2:20 left in the half. Play
stopped about 20 minutes while he lay motionless on the floor. Report this
morning is that he is doing well and suffered no major injury.
CMW pushed the lead to 10 by the break. The roll continued in the second
half with the lead spreading to 20 by the fourth quarter. CMW played
aggressively all game, and got whistled for most of the fouls. However,
Fallston was whistled for at least three technical fouls--including two on
the bench, which mandates that the coach be ejected from the building. The
Mustangs made the most of the foul shots they were awarded, and downed the
Fallston Cougars by a final margin of 24 points
